Where to Stay & What to Do in Colorado's Spanish Peaks Country

SPANISH PEAKS COUNTRY

Last weekend, I visited the #SpanishPeaks of Colorado and per your request, here’s a guide of where to stay and things to do! Jet down before snow season to enjoy their peak fall weather and the color change of the leaves. 🍃🍂 BTW: Looking for the top 11 places to see Colorado’s leaves change? I wrote a guide on that for you too!

Anyway, the Spanish Peaks are a beautiful area and sooo peaceful. Nature feels so healing right now- anyone else had that vibe? Anyway bookmark this post for your trip! 🤗

Here’s what you should do:
1. Stay in #Cuchara if you can! it’s absolutely beautiful and a short drive to so many parks, sites & hikes 🌲 plus there are a ton of great loops just to walk & lots of wildlife to see!

2. Visit Cuchara Mountain Resort & Park- the old ski resort closed when I was little but is now a mountain park full of relics and trails! 🍃You can see all the old lifts, runs & even snow cats that they used to use. You can hike up to the water tower on the property, or do some lower runs under the old lifts. Would be great to go at peak leaf-peeping season too 🍂 ⁣

3. If you don’t bring your own food, pick something up from local eats The Dog Bar. Get the taco salad and a scooby doo pizza; order the dog bar sampler if you’re feeling appetizer adventurous. 🥗🍕⁣

4. Make a day trip to the Sand Dunes! You’re not far from it here, it’s an awesome landscape to hike or run around and take photos in, and the tallest dunes rise over 750 feet high against the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains. 🏔⁣

5. Drive around and read how the Great Dikes and other geologic phenomena were formed millions of years ago in this area, and how unique they are. This is especially fun around the seasonal color change & you’re likely to see wildlife, even just from you car. 🦃⁣

6. Hike the Dodgeton Creek Trail starting at the Spring Creek trailhead in Cuchara, fish for trout in the 10,000-foot-high Blue or Bear Lakes above the town if you’re into that, or hike the Hogback Trail Loop for some views 🏃‍♀️
